Thing's Ain't So Grim Down Deep:

The Incredible Navigation Skills of Harbor Seals

Let's face it, seals are some truly amazing creatures! They can make some epic dives, are loving mothers, and can endure some rough conditions at the bottom of the ocean. In conditions where there's barely any light, and the water's murky, these fluffy sea-dwellers somehow find their way around. But how, you ask? A group of researchers thought it was high-time to discover the secrets behind their navigation skills.

The research team focused on harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) and wanted to know more about how these aquatic creatures navigate in waters with low visibility. The team was fascinated by their ability to maneuver through waters teeming with particles like sand or algae. More specifically, they questioned whether these seals rely on vision to sense the direction they're heading or if they communicate with their whiskers for a more tactile experience.

"Hell, yeah! We needed to know whether harbor seals could figuratively follow the yellow brick road due to optic flow fields," said study author Frederike Hanke in a blunt statement.

To get down to the bottom of the mystery, Hanke and the crew came up with a few computer simulations. The first simulated the open sea with dots appearing and disappearing at different speeds, while the second mimicked a seabed with dots rapidly approaching from different angles. Lastly, the third simulated the surface of the water with dots lining up above the seals' heads.

Three seals – Nick, Luca, and Miro – got a chance to view these simulations on a massive screen. To indicate their guesses, they tapped a red ball. If they were right, they were rewarded with some tasty fish. Nick and Luca dived right into the task, having used a similar setup before, while Miro, the gaming noob, took a little longer to catch on, requiring around six times as many practice sessions.

But catch on, he did! Tony The Tiger would be proud. Miro displayed the same skills as Nick and Luca when determining their direction in the experiments. Even when the water got dark and murky, the seals were still able to pick up the dots' trails to figure out their direction. The team confirmed that the seals could decipher their heading with a pretty decent level of accuracy, though they weren't as ace at it as humans or rhesus monkeys.

"We're dealing with living animals here, not robots," said Hanke. "Errors are probably caused by a lack of focus or a drop in motivation."

In the future, the team plans to investigate the seals' navigational skills further, particularly regarding particles drifting with currents and how they cope in such conditions.

The groundbreaking study reveals previously unknown details about harbor seals and is now featured in The Journal of Experimental Biology.

Enrichment Data:

  • Visual Perception: Harbor seals employ optic flow and visual cues to navigate in low-visibility waters.
  • Sensitivity to Contrast: Their eyes are sensitive to contrast, which allows them to detect changes in environment and dodge obstacles.
  • Experience and Efficiency: Even inexperienced seals can learn and adapt to changing conditions, making them efficient navigators over time.
