Croatian-Argentine Author Stella Maris Cvjetanović Tending to Patagonian Family Legacy

Stella Maris Cvjetanović, a Croatian-Argentine author, left her career as a lawyer and notary to return to her roots in Patagonia, contining her father Mirko Cvjetanovic's legacy. Born in Puerto San Julián, she found herself drawn to the arid soil of southern Argentina where her father turned the desert into a vibrant oasis.

The rural landscape of her childhood in Los Antiguos and Perito Moreno shaped her, as she learned the rhythm of seeds, flood irrigation, harvests, and wind. After her father's advice that one had to earn their bread, Stella pursued a legal career while never severing her connection to the land. Every summer, she returned to the field and now, retired, she intends to build a home there.

Every day, Stella maintains the family oasis with the flood irrigation system her father built, tending to the artisan channels to keep the estate green. She and her siblings strive to preserve the green that has cost their family sweat and tears.

In El Correntoso, where there is no running water, central heating, or luxuries, Stella finds hard work, snow, frost, and wind. This return to her roots was a choice of life, as she feels connected to her father who forged her character and left her with a love for the land he molded.

Stella is also an author, publishing her first novel "When the Lilacs Bloom", inspired by her origins. The story of a centenarian woman recounting her life as a farewell to her husband was exhibited at the Book Fair this year. An avid reader, she was inspired by literature from a young age and developed a love for writing.

In the final stage of her career, Stella was an Official Public Defender, advocating for the most vulnerable people. Reflecting on her childhood, she remembers planting alfalfa from the age of three and finds peace in herself.
