Starting Summer, State underscores work rights for adolescent employees.

In Illinois, as the school year concludes and young people embark on summer employment, the state's labor department has issued a reminder regarding the legal rights and protections that apply to minor workers.

Under the regulation of the Illinois Department of Labor, those under 16 years of age must obtain an employment certificate, confirming their age, physical suitability for the job, and the absence of educational conflicts if they work during the academic year. Minor workers are prohibited from engaging in hazardous occupations and are not permitted to work in establishments where alcohol is produced, sold, or served. During the summer months, work hours are limited, with the day's employment ending by 9 p.m.

For minors aged 18 and under, specific provisions are in place to ensure their wellbeing. They are entitled to earn a minimum hourly wage of $13, receive a 30-minute break for every five hours of work, and are granted a rest day after six consecutive days of employment. Under federal child labor laws, minors aged 16 to 18 also receive additional protections.

Employers and families are encouraged to understand and respect these regulations. Violations of the Child Labor Law can be reported to the Illinois Department of Labor.
