Striking the Right Equilibrium: Work Versus Recreation
July 12, 2022 | Balancing work and leisure for improved well-being
As creatives, business owners, and passionate workers, our professional lives are often filled with dedication and purpose. But what about personal time? Is it given the same level of intention and energy? Alberta Joiner, a content creator and confidence mentor, recently took a break from her business to focus on her leisure time, and the results were surprising.
Before the break, Joiner's evenings and weekends were largely spent recuperating from work, with little balance in her routine. She realized that she was allocating considerable energy to her work, trying to excel in both her day-job and her business. As a result, she often found herself exhausted and lacking motivation during her personal time.
During her break, Joiner focused on her physical health and enjoyed various leisure activities, such as traveling, attending solo cinema trips, drawing, swimming, and reading in coffee shops. The change was revitalizing, and she discovered that dedicating more intention to her leisure time brought noticeable energy benefits.
While taking a break from work is not newsworthy in itself, Joiner's experience highlights the importance of maintaining a balance between work and leisure. She learned once more that her resources are limited, and it's crucial to allocate energy and intention to personal activities to prevent burnout. Returning from her break, Joiner began scheduling leisure activities like appointments, prioritizing them and keeping a mental note of those that brought her the most joy.
Joiner emphasized the need for self-care, as she values both her work and her personal experience during her time on earth. She noticed that it's acceptable to prioritize aspects of her life above her business, such as her health, without compromising her success. She learned that slowing down and doing things at her own pace doesn't diminish her passion for her work.
To help others achieve a similar balance, Joiner suggested journaling about leisure activities, imagining potential benefits, and considering one's priorities in the long term. Journaling can be a valuable tool for self-discovery and setting realistic goals. Ultimately, it's a journey towards self-awareness, understanding one's limits, and finding contentment in life.
