Transformation Initiated at Carsch-Haus, Düsseldorf
In the heart of Düsseldorf, a historic transformation is underway. The iconic Carsch-Haus, originally built as a department store under the Carsch & Co. brand, is set to become the world's most digital department store by spring 2025. This ambitious project, led by SIGNA Real Estate, will breathe new life into the city's retail landscape.
SIGNA Real Estate, a 50% owner of the KaDeWe Group, has announced its plans to revamp the Carsch-Haus, transforming it into a modern department store that will offer a unique mix of fashion, accessories, cosmetics, food, and services. The store will combine new and established, luxurious and progressive brands, creating a dynamic shopping experience for residents and visitors alike.
The renovation of the Carsch-Haus will see the construction of a light well in the summer, and the sales areas will be located from the ground floor to the fourth floor, with the basement beneath the Heinrich-Heine-Platz. The existing roof of the Carsch-Haus will be opened as part of the renovation, and a restaurant/café and a lounge area with a rooftop terrace will be created on the fifth floor.
Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller has confirmed the groundbreaking of the project, which is an important junction between Schadowstraße/Königsallee and the old town with the Rhine. The renovation of the Heinrich-Heine-Platz will make it approximately 3,000 square meters larger, further enhancing the city's vibrant centre.
The new department store will be part of the KaDeWe Group, a major player in the German department store market, which was formed by the merger of Karstadt and Kaufhof. The local spirit and connection to Düsseldorf and its residents are important to the new department store, ensuring it remains a cherished part of the city's fabric.
However, the transformation comes at a cost. SIGNA Real Estate is set to close around 47 branches of Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof by early 2024, resulting in approximately 4,000 job losses. André Maeder, CEO of The KaDeWe Group, has stated that the store will create a new destination in Düsseldorf, offering a fresh shopping experience for the city's residents and visitors.
As the Carsch-Haus prepares to reopen its doors, it will become the most digital department store in the world, marking a significant step forward for Düsseldorf's retail sector. The store promises to offer an unparalleled shopping experience, blending tradition with innovation, and cementing its place as a must-visit destination in the city.
