Transforming Landscapes in Astana: A Look at Extensive Urban Renovation
A Kim's Urban Masterplan for 2023
The mayor of Astana, Kiim Kasymbek, graced his Instagram with updates on the city's 2023 development agenda. According to Vegernyaya Astana, the capital will undergo a significant transformation under the theme of "city for people."
This year, Astana aims to ameliorate 170 courtyard and public spaces, including parks, squares, and boulevards. To achieve this, they plan to plant an additional million trees - seedlings, shrubs, and large trees - across the cityscape. Some newly planted trees can be found along Momyru Street, Zhumaibek Street, Ainakol Street, Tashenov Street, Tlendiev Street, and numerous other prominent thoroughfares.
A notable development is the grand opening of a new square in the Baykonur district, located on Zhubanova Street between Tarkhan and Pushkin Streets. The transformation will feature extensive greening works, the installation of stylish street furniture such as benches, tables, and trash cans, and the creation of a parking lot.
Further improvements will be made to Abai Avenue, one of the capital's historical arteries. The stretch from Republic Avenue to Valikhanov Street will receive a complete overhaul, covering an area of 1.1 hectares.
With an emphasis on the convenience of pedestrians and exceptional greening, the LRT route's streets, such as Syganak Street and Kabandy Baitursyn Street, will benefit from the planting of an impressive 7,500 trees and the construction of comfortable spaces under the overpasses. These developments will elevate these traffic arteries into vibrant, accessible spaces for everyone.
Pedestrian boulevards, like Greenline behind the "Han Shatyry" shopping center, will be extended and transformed into a relaxing, picturesque oasis. Initial developments will span from Kultegin Street to Anet Baba, creating a tranquil retreat for citizens.
In line with this transformation, the city's green zones, such as the Botanical Garden, Nurzhol Boulevard, the central park's alley, Koktal Park, and more, will undergo improvement and greening.
Last year, significant progress was made along Zhurgenev Street, extending from Koskharbayev Avenue to Baiturlynov Street, where 2,400 trees, 4,700 shrubs, and a living fence were planted. This year, the city plans to continue the improvement of that street.
Lastly, greening efforts will continue for the park cluster along the Yesil River, which includes the Park of Peace and Accord, Triathlon Park, and the Sports Embankment. Improvements will be made across each of Astana's five administrative districts, ensuring an inviting, well-maintained living environment for all citizens.
