Exploring the Urdenbacher Altrhein: A Spring Preview Excursion

In the heart of Düsseldorf, a unique riverside habitat awaits exploration. On Sunday, March 8, nature enthusiasts can join a spring preview excursion to discover the transformation of the Urdenbacher Altrhein, a former Rhine river branch preserved as a nature reserve and bird sanctuary since 1926.

Meeting Point: The Urdenbacher Altrhein parking lot at Löricker Straße.

Tour Leader: Guided by the nature expert, Gerrit Jakob.

Registration: Interested participants need to sign up in advance by contacting the responsible nature conservation organization or the event organizer. You can reach them by calling 0211-8994800 or emailing [email protected].

Duration: Approximately 2 to 3 hours.

This excursion offers participants the chance to learn about the natural history, ecology, and ongoing conservation efforts in this unique riverside habitat during the spring season.

The Urdenbacher Altrhein is home to a variety of rare species, including the stone curlew. These elusive birds can be heard making their distinctive mating calls during the first warmer nights of the year.

The "Piels Loch" Hiking Parking Lot

The "Piels Loch" hiking parking lot, located at Baumberger Weg/Drängenburger Straße, is a meeting point for events related to stone curlews. The nearest public stop for this location is Mühlenplatz.

Stone Curlew Tours

Stone curlew tours, which take place in all weather conditions and typically last one and a half to two hours, also start from the "Piels Loch" hiking parking lot. A participation fee of five euros per person is charged for these tours (unless otherwise stated). Children under 14 can participate for free.

Biologist Elke Lopke emphasizes the importance of fruit trees, hay meadows, and willows for rare stone curlews, but no new information about this was provided in the current article.

The maximum number of participants for the stone curlew events is 25. Prior registration is required for these events.
