Underground revolution: Punk music persists at Schokoladen

In the heart of Berlin's Mitte district, Schokoladen stands as a testament to the city's vibrant artistic and musical spirit. This historic independent music venue, originally built in 1881, has weathered the test of time, surviving wars, shifting governments, and the fall of the Berlin Wall, all the way to modern gentrification.

The building, adorned with a weathered facade decorated with flags and colorful bunting, found its new life in the 90s when a group of artists moved in and made it their own. Today, it continues to operate despite the closure of nearby venues like Tacheles, serving as a middle finger to the area's oversaturated commercialization.

Schokoladen is more than just a music venue. It hosts a variety of events, from live music concerts to theatre performances, reading groups, and community events. The venue's library is a treasure trove for book lovers, offering a quiet space for reading and reflection.

The venue's commitment to nurturing talent is evident in its support for both emerging and established artists. Schokoladen has provided a stage for a diverse range of bands, including Fontaines D.C., Future Islands, Die Ärzte, Downtown Boys, and local punk heroes Beatsteaks.

Schokoladen's independence was secured in 2012 after the owner won a fight against eviction. The venue is now run by a collective known as Schoko-Laden eV, named after the building's former life as a chocolate factory. Their goal remains to support non-commercial artistic collectives and community events.

Accessibility is a key priority for Schokoladen. Ticket and bar prices are kept low to ensure that everyone can enjoy the events and atmosphere. The venue also compensates musicians fairly for their performances, offering free accommodation to touring performers and free drinks at the bar.

Every year, Schokoladen hosts the 'Hoffest', a free community event celebrating its history and mission. This event is a testament to the venue's dedication to fostering a sense of community and belonging within Berlin's cultural landscape.

In summary, Schokoladen is a historic, artist-focused venue that continues to shape Berlin’s cultural and musical life through diverse programming and dedicated support for both new and veteran musicians. Its address, Ackerstr. 169, Mitte, invites music lovers and culture enthusiasts to experience its unique charm and energy.
