"Unexpected influx overwhelms Menterschwaige": Unanticipated surge of visitors overruns the establishment
The Time-Honored Duo: The Parish Priest and the CEO of Augustiner
There's a familiar rhythm to the partnership between Father Rainer Schießler and Martin Leibhard, CEO of Augustiner. They've known each other since their school days, and their paths have cross time and again. "Frankly, we wouldn't have predicted this back then," confesses Schießler. The grand unveiling of the Menterschwaige estate was not their first joint celebration with the parish priest of Glockenbach quarter.
Gutshof Menterschwaige: Carriage Bells, Blessings, and Merriment
With Leibhard's speech about tavern culture wrapped up, Schießler chuckles, "Enough chatting, it's your turn!" He delivers his condensed oration and swiftly moves on to the blessing. The background symphony of jingling brewery carriage bells signals it's time to eat, drink, and converse. Pamela and Till Weiß, the shining hosts, are at the center of it all. "Best hosts you could hope for," Leibhard praises them.
The Munich Chronicles
The previous hosts at the Menterschwaige were Christian Schottenhamel and Löwenbräu beer. The property once belonged to the Kuffler group before being purchased by Tipico founder Dieter Pawlik in 2020. Pamela and Till Weiß hail from the Augustiner am Wörthsee, a name they were previously unfamiliar with. "I only knew it as a construction site," Till Weiß remarks with regret.
Filled to Capacity: "We Didn't Anticipate This!"
In mid-April, Till Weiß and his team opened the restaurant for the first time, followed by the beer garden, and more recently, the adjacent hotel. It took a few weeks to find their groove, but the hosts are thrilled with the outcome, as they reveal to the AZ. On May 1st, they were almost overwhelmed. "Truth be told, we weren't prepared for this," Till Weiß says, laughing. However, the team managed to handle the bustling crowd.
The locals of Harlaching and Grünwald have warmly welcomed the new Menterschwaige. Evidence of this can be found in the attendance of actress Veronika Ferres with her husband, entrepreneur Carsten Maschmeyer, at the opening. Augustiner colleagues were also present, including Gregor Lemke, the downtown host, and Lorenz Stiftl, who runs an Augustiner inn at the Viktualienmarkt and will be the Wiesn host in the Paulaner tent next year.
Not Just Another "Etepetete" Restaurant, but a "Tavern Plus"
Till Weiß has no intention of transforming the Menterschwaige into a swanky "Etepetete" restaurant. Instead, he envisions it as a "tavern plus." At the Augustiner am Wörthsee, they served classic Bavarian tavern fare. "Now I'd like to incorporate a bit of what I did previously," says Till Weiß. He honed his skills as a chef in several five-star superior hotels and wants to add a touch of those gourmet experiences while keeping it authentic and Bavarian.
With an emphasis on local and organic ingredients, the dishes will retain their traditional roots with some creative twists. Price-wise, Till Weiß promises it will all stay within reach. During the opening, they served delicious spit-roasted beef from the beechwood grill, a dish that's available on the regular restaurant menu on Fridays through Sundays (€21.90 with potato dumplings and sauerkraut). A half liter costs €4.50, while a liter in the beer garden goes for €8.90. Of course, the picturesque green surroundings come as a complimentary bonus.
