Updates on Tour Schedules for Zanders Region Exploration
Project Zanders-Areal Announces New Guided Tours
Starting from Monday, July 21, 2025, the Project Zanders-Areal team has announced new dates for weekly guided tours. These tours offer a unique opportunity to delve into the rich history and industrial heritage of the site, located at the heart of the city center.
Registration for these enlightening experiences will open on July 11, 2025, at 12:00 PM, and can be done on the official website, www.ourwebsite.de/fuehrungen-zanders-gelaende2.aspx.
The tours will begin either at 15:00 or 16:00, depending on the specific date. The first tour, led by Dr. Sabine Schachtner, titled "Historical Trace - Paper Production at Zanders", is scheduled for Monday, August 4, 2025.
Dr. Schachtner, former director of the LVR-Industriemuseum Alte Dombach, will provide insights into the development of industrial paper production. Another knowledgeable guide, Frank Stugg, the former Zanders Works Fire Chief and current Liegenschaftsmanagement employee, will also lead some tours, offering perspectives from a trained papermaker.
The tours will feature various routes to explore the future quarter, each offering a unique perspective on the site's history. One such tour is the "Papermaker's Tour" led by Frank Stugg on September 8, 2025. Another tour, "The Paper Factory and the Zanders Family", led by city guide Roswith Wirtz, will discuss the development of the family-owned paper factory in the historic rooms of the 1905 administration building.
Erich Olpen, a former electrician at the Zanders paper factory, will lead the "Coal's Path" tour, which follows the energy carrier coal through the Zanders site, including its arrival by goods trains and the historic power plant designed by Dominikus Böhm in 1931. The next date for this tour is July 28, 2025.
Once the 20 spots per date are filled for a tour, it will be possible to sign up for a waiting list via email at [email protected]. The meeting point for all tours is the porter's lodge at the entrance to the Zanders-Areal.
