Vatican Lifts Limitation for Rupnik Abuse Trial, Ensuring Victims' Participation

Pope Francis has lifted the statute of limitations, enabling the Vatican City to proceed with the investigation and trial of Father Marko Rupnik. The move allows victims to participate as injured parties, ensuring transparency and fairness.

The Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors had previously raised concerns about the handling of Father Rupnik's case and the lack of outreach to victims. Lawyer Laura Sgrò, representing the victims, hopes for justice and truth to prevail. The trial will be overseen by an independent panel of judges, external to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. Father Rupnik, a prominent Jesuit and artist, faces allegations of sexual, spiritual, and psychological abuse from over two dozen women, dating back to the 1980s. Despite previous suspensions and excommunications, the Vatican City has now initiated a canonical trial. The Diocese of Koper incardinated Father Rupnik despite his dismissal from the Jesuits and ongoing abuse allegations.

The Vatican City has taken steps to ensure a fair and transparent trial for Father Rupnik's victims. The independent panel of judges will oversee the proceedings, with victims participating as injured parties. The outcome of the trial remains to be seen, but the Vatican City's actions signal a commitment to addressing the allegations and providing justice.
