Zoo in Byculla, Mumbai to upgrade with modern aquarium and larger penguin enclosure; construction slated for September commencement

Byculla Zoo, officially known as Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo, is set to enhance its facilities with a new addition - a state-of-the-art aquarium. This exciting development, part of an ongoing expansion effort, is scheduled to begin construction within a month.

The aquarium, which will be operated by the contractor also responsible for enlarging the penguin habitat, will house 46 different marine species. It will boast four square, five circular, and two semicircular fish tanks, providing ample space for various aquatic life.

Visitors, especially children, can look forward to a pop-up window that allows for a closer look at the fish. The aquarium will also feature a dome-shaped entrance, adding a touch of grandeur.

To ensure the safety and well-being of the marine life, a special aquatic life-saving system with a capacity of 10 lakhs litres will be installed. The system is designed to maintain optimal conditions for the various species.

The expanded penguin enclosure, set to cover an additional 200 square metres, will accommodate 40 Humboldt penguins. This expansion aims to prevent territorial conflicts among the penguins.

The aquarium will also include elements similar to sea life, such as stones, to create a more authentic environment for the marine species. Two acrylic walk-through tunnels will allow visitors to immerse themselves in the underwater world.

Byculla Zoo, a popular local attraction, began as a botanical garden in 1861 and has since evolved into a zoo featuring multiple animal exhibits, including a penguin colony introduced in 2016. The zoo is known for continuous upgrades in its animal habitats and visitor facilities, including the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum within its premises.

The recent expansion projects, including the new aquarium and penguin enclosure enlargement, are driven by animal welfare concerns and are funded by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, which has already invested over ₹25 crore in penguin upkeep. No explicit records of controversies related to the aquarium's construction have emerged from the latest information available.

The new aquarium and expanded penguin enclosure at Byculla Zoo are exciting developments that promise to enrich the zoo-going experience for visitors and provide a safe and stimulating environment for the animals. Stay tuned for more updates on these exciting projects!

Locals and tourists alike can anticipate a captivating blend of news and novelty as the upcoming aquarium at Byculla Zoo, part of the zoo's ongoing lifestyle improvements, is set to showcase various marine species and artificial sea-life elements. Home-and-garden enthusiasts may also find interest in the enlarged penguin habitat, which aims to provide a more spacious and conflict-free environment for the Humboldt penguins residing there.
